About The Little Chapel

A Labor of Love The Little Chapel was the brainchild of Brother Déodat, who began its construction in March 1914. Inspired by the grotto and basilica at Lourdes, France, Brother Déodat sought to create a miniature version. The current structure, the third iteration, stands as a testament to his dedication and vision. Covered in shells, pebbles, and broken china, this chapel is a striking piece of art.

History The first chapel, built in 1914, was soon demolished by Brother Déodat after criticism. The second, completed later that year, was also torn down when the Bishop of Portsmouth found it too small. The third and final version, constructed with meticulous care, became famous thanks to an article in the Daily Mirror, which led to donations from around the world.

Brother Déodat returned to France in 1939 due to ill health, leaving the chapel unfinished. Brother Cephas continued the work until 1965. In 1977, a committee was formed to preserve the chapel, and today it falls under the care of The Little Chapel Foundation.

Admission There is no charge to enter the chapel; it relies entirely on public donations.
