Le Port a la Jument House in Sark, Channel Islands - 3 bedroom main house + two bedroom cottage.
Le Port à la Jument is one of Sark`s original tenement houses, the forty farmhouses built in Elizabethan times by settlers under the reign of the island`s first Seigneur, Helier de Carteret. Whilst a few of these forty pioneering families came from England and France, most, like Helier, came from St.Ouen on the west coast of Jersey.
Le Port a la Jument stands on the west coast of Sark, above the bay of the same name and, unusually for old Sark houses, has a sea view. It was built in 1690and there is a significant ‘Jersey` influence, both in the style & design of the use and in the use of much pink Jersey granite.
The present owners of Le Port a la Jument bought the tenement, along with the house, in 2004. The house was too large for their needs so they converted the Dower Cottage to provide an income from a separate ‘self catering` unit, which has been very successful, but it is now time for them to move on and allow new owners the opportunity to enjoy this unique property as they have done. The property is being offered for sale on a long lease, which would be converted to freehold should ‘land reform` come to Sark.
‘Le Port a la Jument` is a lovely family home - our home since May 2004 - after replacing the windows and installing central heating. Although the whole house was used as a home for the previous tenants, we found it too large and separated the Dower Cottage for self-catering accommodation. This has been very successful and we have many guests who have returned every year since we started. However, taking the Dower back into the main house would be a simple matter, with only one doorway bricked up for privacy.
The Main House - As you enter the main house through the front door, the sitting room is on your left. Straight in front is a hall with stairs going up and on your right the dining room which leads through to the kitchen. The first floor provides three double bedrooms, family bathroom and a small box room. The large attic is not currently in use, but would make another very nice bedroom suite if required, with views out across Herm to Guernsey.
The kitchen is also situated within the extension at the back of the house; together with a lobby area (with space for hanging coats and leaving boots & shoes) and a separate toilet.
The Dower Cottage is to the right of the main house. This is our self-catering cottage, which many guests have enjoyed visiting over the years. This cottage provides a sitting room, kitchen-diner and bathroom on the ground floor; with a double bedroom and a twin bedroom on the first floor.
Behind the Dower Cottage is yet another small cottage which we have not used other than for storage. This has three small rooms - a bedroom, a sitting room with fire-place and a kitchen with another fire-place. There are no modern facilities in this part of the property (such as water or toilet).
In the back garden there are various sheds and a greenhouse. We also have a swimming pool which we put in early on, for our family`s enjoyment. Although not heated, it is a wonderful way to cool down on a hot sunny day and we have used it well - it is a wonderful area for family enjoyment. The garden is quite large, with mature trees and bushes providing a sanctuary for the bird and insect world. To the left of the main house is the ‘house barn` - ideal for keeping garden furniture and tools in.
