'Meet the Agent' - Christie Plathe - Joy Lusher Real Estate Ltd.

This month for “Meet the Agent’ we interview Christie Plathe, Rental & Sales Agent, Joy Lusher Real Estate Ltd. Christie discusses why she enjoys working at Joy Lusher Real Estate, her favourite property on the market currently and also the outlook for the Bermuda property market over the next 12 months.

How long have you been a real estate agent? Since October 2013  

Why do you like working for Joy Lusher Real Estate Ltd.? It is a small family owned business with wonderful, dedicated employees. The business was started by my Grandmother Joy Lusher and then taken over by my Mother about 15 years ago. Both have excelled in creating a highly respected reputation for themselves and I am proud to say I am part of this Agency. 

What is the favorite part of your job? Getting to meet new people every day and discovering magnificent properties around Bermuda that I had no idea existed. It is very satisfying to find just the right property for my clients, whether to buy or rent.

What is your favorite property on the market right now? A house named “Kelton” on Rosemont Avenue in Pembroke. “Kelton” is dated but quite a unique house. It is in need of some major TLC but has huge potential. The property surrounding it affords maximum privacy and has a lovely little ‘secret garden’. It is zoned Res.1 and alternatively it offers a great opportunity for the development of multiple dwellings in a prime location within walking distance of Hamilton. 


What property on the market right now, in your opinion, do you think is really good value?Manor House #30. A lovely two bedroom condo move in ready. Perfect for a first time homeowner or someone looking for an investment at an affordable price. Manor House is a very desirable complex and this unit would be perfect to rent for some extra income. This is a ground floor unit so there are no stairs which also makes it a good option for someone looking to retire and downsize.


How do you see the Bermuda property market over the next 12 months? I think the market is going to continue to improve. If the ARV is changed from $177,000 to $153,000 as they are suggesting it will be a huge plus for international purchasers as they will be able to expand their options. This in turn has a filter down effect and will help boost the Bermuda only market. The sale of condominiums and land remains somewhat stagnant but hopefully in time sales in these sectors of the market will also begin to pick up. And with Bermuda being so fortunate as to host the America’s Cup, we will see a significant upswing in the rentals market as we will need to house not only team members but their families and spectators. 

What are your top 3 tips when looking for a potential new home? 1. The most important first step is to meet with your bank representative and get pre-approved for a mortgage.   2. Make sure you take the time to really explore the market before making a decision!  3. Consider having a survey done on the property you choose to ensure that it is structurally sound.
